Living in New York City is exhilarating, but sometimes the fast-paced energy can be overwhelming. As much as I love the vibrant streets, the occasional weekend escape to recharge and reconnect with nature or culture is a must. Over the years, I’ve explored some incredible destinations just a short drive or train ride away. Whether you're looking for outdoor adventures, charming small towns, or luxurious beach retreats, these ten getaways are my absolute favorites.
1. Hudson Valley, NY (2- 4 hour drive, Amtrak from Penn Station)

If you’re a fan of charming small towns, scenic hikes, and top-notch farm-to-table dining, Hudson Valley is a dream destination. One of my favorite things to do is visit the Storm King Art Center, an open-air museum with massive sculptures scattered across rolling hills. After that, I usually grab a bite at The Roundhouse in Beacon, where the food is as spectacular as the waterfall views. If you love wine, don't miss the local wineries like Brotherhood Winery, the oldest in America.
2. The Catskills, NY (2-3 hours by car)

There’s something magical about the Catskills, no matter the season. I love hiking Kaaterskill Falls, a stunning two-tiered waterfall, in the summer, and cozying up in a cabin during the winter. If you’re into skiing, Hunter Mountain and Windham offer some of the best slopes close to NYC. For a unique experience, book a stay at The Roxbury, a whimsical boutique motel with themed rooms that make every visit an adventure.
3. The Hamptons, NY (2.5-hour drive, LIRR from Penn Station)
The Hamptons may have a reputation for being a playground for the rich and famous, but there are ways to enjoy it without breaking the bank. I love walking along Coopers Beach, grabbing lobster rolls at Lunch (The Lobster Roll) in Amagansett, and exploring the vineyards like Wölffer Estate. If you’re into art, the Parrish Art Museum in Water Mill is a must-visit.
4. Philadelphia, PA (1.5-hour train from Penn Station)

Philly is one of my go-to cities for a quick cultural getaway. Every time I visit, I make sure to stop at Reading Terminal Market for an incredible food experience, including the must-try cheesesteaks or a warm and gooey pretzel. History lovers can explore Independence Hall and the Liberty Bell, while art enthusiasts should head straight to the Barnes Foundation or the Philadelphia Museum of Art (yes, you can run up the famous “Rocky” steps!).
5. The Berkshires, MA (3-hour drive)
This area is a perfect mix of outdoor adventure and artistic inspiration. I fell in love with the Norman Rockwell Museum in Stockbridge, which beautifully captures small-town America. In the summer, I highly recommend catching a live concert at Tanglewood, the Boston Symphony Orchestra’s summer home. The Berkshires also have some of the best hiking trails, like Monument Mountain, offering breathtaking panoramic views.
6. Lake George, NY (3.5-hour drive)
For a classic Adirondack getaway, Lake George is a gem. I love taking a steamboat cruise across the lake, exploring Fort William Henry, and unwinding with a lakeside bonfire at night. Adventure seekers should check out Prospect Mountain, which has a stunning scenic drive and hiking options.
7. Washington, D.C. (3-hour Amtrak from Penn Station)

I never get tired of visiting D.C. because there’s always something new to explore. The Smithsonian museums are free and offer endless hours of discovery. Walking along the National Mall at sunset is an unforgettable experience, especially when the Lincoln Memorial lights up. If you’re a foodie, check out Founding Farmers for a delicious brunch or dinner.
8. Montauk, NY (3-hour drive, LIRR from Penn Station)
Montauk, known as “The End” of Long Island, has a relaxed, surf-town vibe that I absolutely love. One of my favorite things to do is hike to the Montauk Lighthouse, which offers breathtaking ocean views. For a laid-back evening, I head to Navy Beach for cocktails and a perfect sunset over the water. If you’re into seafood, don’t skip Duryea’s, where you can feast on a delicious seafood tower.
9. Newport, RI (3-hour drive, Amtrak + ferry option)
Newport is a charming coastal escape that’s perfect for history buffs and sailing enthusiasts. Walking along the Cliff Walk, which stretches past stunning Gilded Age mansions, is a must. I always make time to tour The Breakers, a mansion that once belonged to the Vanderbilt family. If you’re visiting in the summer, grab a lobster roll at The Mooring and enjoy the ocean breeze.
10. Woodstock, NY (2-hour drive)
Woodstock has an artsy, bohemian spirit that makes it one of my favorite quick getaways. The town is full of quirky shops, cozy cafés, and live music venues. For nature lovers, a hike up Overlook Mountain offers incredible views, plus the chance to explore mysterious abandoned hotel ruins. Bread Alone Bakery is my go-to spot for a fresh pastry and a warm drink before heading home.
Final Thoughts
Whether you're in need of a quiet escape in nature, a luxurious beach retreat, or a cultural city break, these destinations offer something special. I’ve personally fallen in love with each of these places and hope you find them just as magical. With so many fantastic getaways just a short trip from NYC, the hardest part is deciding where to go first!
