Famed for its picturesque canals and charming architecture, Amsterdam is one of Europe’s most charming cities. Whether you wish to admire art at world-class museums, enjoy the city’s hedonistic nightlife, or explore colorful neighborhoods and beautiful parks, a visit to the Dutch capital promises to be a memorable experience.
Day 1 – New Year’s Eve
Amsterdam instantly captivated me with its festive energy. I checked into my hotel and headed to Dam Square around 4:00 PM to join the lively pre-fireworks celebrations. The streets were buzzing with locals and tourists, and impromptu firework displays kept me on my toes—literally! Around 7:00 PM, I made my way to Oosterdok, a prime spot to soak in the festivities. The view of the harbor and city skyline kept me entertained while waiting for the midnight spectacle. By 11:00 PM, the area was packed with families, couples, and travelers, all ready to welcome 2019. When the clock struck midnight, the sky erupted into a dazzling fireworks display. Colors lit up the city from every direction—it was breathtaking! The celebratory atmosphere spilled into the streets, where I joined jubilant crowds reveling in the moment.
Pro Tips:
Arrive early for prime viewing spots. Recommended locations include Dam Square, Magere Brug, Amstel River, or the SkyLounge at DoubleTree. Oosterdok, in my opinion, offers the best views.
If your hotel isn’t within walking distance, expect high taxi or Uber fares after the celebrations.
Day 2 – Exploring Amsterdam
After a late start, I took a bus into the city, leaving my car at the hotel. Amsterdam’s public transport is seamless and convenient. My day began with a walking tour of the city’s iconic canals and stunning architecture. Each canal had its unique charm, with picturesque bridges, historic monuments, and colorful 17th-century townhouses.
I wandered to Dam Square, where I admired the Royal Palace, the towering National Monument, and the festive Christmas tree. After soaking in the area’s vibrant energy, I strolled over to the Red Light District. This neighborhood is a must-see for its unique culture, vibrant nightlife, and open expression. The coffee shops, bars, boutique shops, and striking architecture made the visit fascinating.
The day ended at the Rijksmuseum, a must-visit for art and history enthusiasts. During winter, the museum transforms its grounds into a magical ice-skating rink, surrounded by Christmas market stalls selling warm drinks, local snacks, and crafts. Even if you don’t skate (like me), the festive atmosphere is unforgettable!
