If you're looking for a weekend escape that combines rich history with vibrant culture, San Antonio is the perfect destination. As a lifelong fan of the Spurs, I was eager to explore this Texas city that has so much to offer. Known for its iconic sites like the River Walk and the Alamo, I embarked on an unforgettable journey, At the time of my visit I stayed at The El Tropicano Riverwalk Hotel, perfectly situated near the city's major attractions. The hotel featured an incredible elevated pool and a tiki bar, making it a little slice of paradise.
A Stroll Along the River Walk
My San Antonio adventure kicked off with a magical stroll along the River Walk on Friday late afternoon. It felt like a scene pulled from a movie. The enhanced 15-mile pathway was adorned with shimmering lights reflecting off the water, creating an enchanting atmosphere. As I walked south along the riverbank, I discovered a multitude of vibrant restaurants and lively bars. The sounds of laughter and clinking glasses filled the air. Water taxis, lit up in varying colors, glided down the river, adding to the festive vibe perfect for people-watching. After wandering for a while, I stopped at Merkaba, a cocktail bar renowned for its innovative drink selection. I decided to indulge in their best-selling “Herbal Spritz,” made with fresh herbs and artisan gin. Relaxing by the river with my handcrafted drink was an excellent way to begin my San Antonio adventure.
Discovering the Historic Alamo
The next morning, I set out early for the Alamo, the site of Texas’ most famous battle. I left my hotel around 8:30 AM and took a pleasant 10-minute walk to the historic site. The Alamo stands as a testament to bravery, framed by the tall oak trees that surround it.
Visiting the Alamo is free, but for a richer experience, guided tours are available for about $15. These tours deepen your understanding of the sacrifices made during the Texas Revolution. I learned that the Alamo played a crucial role as a fort during the siege in 1836, where 189 Texians and Tejanos defended the mission against a much larger Mexican army.
After my time there, I ventured southeast to Schilo's, a legendary German eatery that has been serving delicious meals since 1914. I enjoyed their famous German pancake breakfast, a perfect blend of savory and sweet that fueled me for the exciting day ahead.
A View From the Tower of the Americas
Feeling energized, I headed to the Tower of the Americas, a soaring 750-foot structure offering one of the best views in the city. While I considered going up to the Chart House Restaurant at the top, I opted to soak in the atmosphere below. Watching visitors ascending the tower, cameras in hand, was a captivating experience in itself.
For those who do choose to go up, the Observation Deck allows you to see panoramic views of San Antonio. Keep in mind, tickets are around $16, and it is worthwhile for stunning photo opportunities.

Exploring the Pearl District
Next on my agenda was the Pearl District, famous for its trendy eateries and historic buildings. Instead of taking the River Walk, I opted for a leisurely stroll along King William Street, where beautiful historic homes line the street.
The architecture here was striking, with many houses constructed in the late 19th century. Each residence had its own unique story to tell, reminiscent of a bygone era.
Once I reached the Pearl District, I was thrilled to find a bustling farmers market happening that Saturday. It featured over 40 vendors selling fresh, local produce, artisanal goods, and homemade crafts. I couldn't resist sipping on some freshly squeezed orange juice while exploring the festive atmosphere.
Evening at the Market Square
As dusk approached, I made my way to Market Square, one of the largest Mexican markets in the U.S. The lively atmosphere was filled with music, laughter, and the mouthwatering aroma of freshly prepared meals. As I explored, I discovered stalls offering colorful crafts and handmade goods. I couldn’t resist picking up unique souvenirs like vibrant pottery and local spices. One of the highlights of my visit was tasting the street tacos—each bite bursting with flavor and authenticity. It’s an absolute must-try when in San Antonio!
On my walk back to the city center, I strolled along the San Antonio Riverwalk. While much of it is lined with bustling restaurants, shops, and attractions, there are also tranquil stretches where you can enjoy a peaceful walk by the water. Along the way, I passed under numerous bridges, each with intricate stonework, all vying to stand out.
During my 40-minute walk, I came across some remarkable sights:
The Grotto – A hidden gem along the Riverwalk. This man-made cave, featuring beautiful stonework and cascading waterfalls, is a must-see. It’s the perfect spot to snap photos or simply pause to enjoy the beauty.
Bat Loco – The bridge near Camden and Newell Streets is known for its bat population. Every August, the city celebrates them with the Bat Loco Bash, a festival dedicated to these flying creatures.
Fish Sculptures – As you continue along the Riverwalk, look out for the glowing, hanging fish sculptures that come alive after dark.
San Antonio River Lock and Dam – This fascinating site controls the flow of the river, ensuring a smooth and scenic experience along the walk.
I eventually reached E Market Street just in time to catch a water taxi and experience the Riverwalk at dusk. While it’s beautiful during the day, seeing it illuminated at night is truly magical. If you have the chance, I highly recommend exploring the Riverwalk after dark—it's an unforgettable experience!
